THE Fifth Stu’s Phoenix Challenge in the Brecon Beacons has once again been a big success.
The annual event is held in tribute to Group Commander Stu Crebbin of Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service who died in March 2021 aged 46 after a 12-month battle with cancer.
In 2020, he undertook The Brecon Beacons 10 Peaks Traverse (East to West) with his Phoenix Challenge team, covering 42 miles in 24 hours.
Despite having intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions in the lead-up, Stu completed most of the challenge.
This year, the biggest ever contingent of walkers, numbering 51 and including representatives from three different fire services, retired colleagues, family, friends and even three dogs, undertook the challenge.
“Two family-friendly options gave the opportunity for all ages and abilities to take part, and enjoy a fantastic day out in the Brecon Beacons while raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity,” said organiser Crew Commander Spencer Jones.
“The event continues to grow momentum aligned with Stu Crebbin’s vision, walking and talking while fundraising.”
Stu’s family, who are based in Hartlepool, were unable to join the walkers in Wales this time but have supported the challenge in past years.
The total raised this year is fast approaching £1,000 and, over the five challenges to date, the total is now more than £25,000.
