A THRIVING example exists right here in Ross-on-Wye of a Probus Club which meets to further friendship, enlightenment and entertainment wrapped up in a warm and fun atmosphere
The Vaga Probus Club, named after the River Wye’s Roman name, which stems from vagus, meaning to roam (vagor) or the wanderer, was founded way back in 1988 with a membership of 31 and Dr Ben Carruthers being voted in as its first President.
The club is one of the many Probus Clubs that operate throughout the UK and in many other countries and meets twice a month
The focus is on a talk that is delivered by either a member or outside speaker on a vast array of subjects. The membership recently enjoyed talks on the last great Air Race and Where is Hong Kong now?
One member said: “Probus provides me with good and friendly companionship and the opportunity to enjoy some excellent talks, really enjoyable.
“I get to meet so many quite fascinating and amenable people from whom I learn so much.”
One of the club's strengths is that its appeal is very broad with the membership representing a vast array of past careers, backgrounds and experience, which in itself enriches the inhouse talks and general member to member interaction.
Although the club membership is made up of retired professional and businessmen, there are also a series of annual events, trips and social activities which wives and partners attend.
Another member added: “When I attend, I know that I will be surrounded by others who share my basic values, something that is rare and that I personally treasure”.
The group meets on the second and the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Ross Conservative Club in the Avenue.
