The former Ross-on-Wye Town Council offices at the Corn Exchange, could be become a public space as the town council investigates ways of using it in the future.
The council moved to new premises in a former chapel in Cantilupe Road back in 2024 leaving the Corn Exchange office - above Rossiter bookshop in the High Street - vacant. Now, councillors have heard their former home could find a new lease of life.
At a council meeting last month, the town clerk told councillors she had discussed options with agents and Herefordshire Council for the future use of the property, and that condition surveys are soon to be undertaken.
A quote of £1,875 has been accepted for a level three building survey of both the Corn Exchange and the new town hall.
She said the Corn Exchange is currently registered as unoccupied with the business rates department at the council and that no rates are payable while it is empty. An empty rate relief has created a credit of £338.63.
The discussion, which took place behind closed doors agreed that the council would ‘investigate use of the Corn Exchange as a public space, possibly dual purpose’
It was also agreed that a question should be asked within the budget consultation on whether Ross-on-Wye should have a physical museum.
