THE traditional Flitch Cup provides the opportunity for married couples to demonstrate that they are equally at home both on and off the course at Ross Golf Club, reports KEITH RAY.
In previous years Alison and Adrian Hope have shown themselves to be the most adept in this department at the Gorsley-based club.
And they were looking to complete a Flitch Cup hat-trick having won the last two competitions, represented by an 18 holes greensomes stableford honours board event, where players play alternately, so the responsibilities are shared equally.
However, Christine and Tony Morris, relative newcomers to the Ross Club's tree-lined course and playing in their first Flitch Cup, enjoyed a marvellous day and ultimately Alison and Adrian had to settle for third place on the final score-sheet with 35 stableford points.
Tony and Christine combined impressively, especially on their front nine holes, amassing a marvellous 22-point total which proved crucial in the final analysis.
Steady play thereafter as they mastered the more demanding back nine resulted in a 38 points total which gave them a one-point advantage over their nearest rivals and proved just enough.
This enabled Tony and Christine to enjoy the club's trophy presentation evening which took place a few weeks later, with Ross Club president Graeme Forrester and his wife Jeanette with 37 points finishing runners-up.
The winners will probably be better known to many Ross Gazette readers having spent many years teaching at John Kyrle High School together, where he was Head of Maths and she taught English and PE.
Meanwhile, club members can enjoy a ‘Pizza and Pasta night’ and a putting competition on Tuesday, November 12.
The putting night is £5 to enter, with a main course priced at £10 and dessert £5 (children U12 eat free). More details at www.facebook.com/rossonwyegolfclub
