Ross was not able to hold onto the Forest Combination Cup which they won last season, as Drybrook mounted a second half comeback that saw them over the line with a last minute try to seal the win.
The home side were the first out of the blocks with a series of good carries by their forwards. This saw them crash over to score with less than five minutes on the clock and they took an early 5-0 lead.
Ross did not panic though, and slowly dragged themselves back into the game. Aaron Ryder converted a penalty to peg Drybrooks’ lead back to 5-3 and then some neat handling saw Gavin Oates sneak down the blindside to score.
Aaron nailed the touchline conversion and Ross were 10-5 ahead. Ross had the better of the last ten minutes of the half but could not extend their lead and they went into the break 10-5 ahead.
As in the first half, it was Drybrook who were quickest out of the blocks with an early score that was converted and Ross found themselves 12-10 down.
Again they worked themselves back into the game and Aaron Ryder held his nerve and slotted a 35 yard penalty to see Ross regain the lead 13-12 . The game was in the balance, however, it was Drybrook who controlled territory in the last quarter and a penalty put them back in front 15-13.
Ross could not get out of their half to mount one last challenge and a last try by the home side sealed victory at 22-13.
Ross’s season is not over though next, on Sunday, May 7th they travel to Dudley Kingswinford RFC to take on Bromyard in the North Mids cup final, an 11.15am kick off, so why not set the alarm and travel up to support your town’s rugby team.
