A LONG-STANDING member of the Ross Golf Club, Barry Norton, has been making waves in the 2024 season, particularly in the men's 55+ seniors' section.
After a series of strong performances, Norton has established himself as a top contender in the club's major events, including the prestigious Layton Cup.
The Layton Cup, a six-round tournament, is one of the most competitive events for the club's senior members. Players aim to achieve the highest stableford points across their best three rounds.
Norton showcased his skills in the third round, scoring 39 points, which included nine gross pars and an impressive 21 points on the back nine. This score tied with Jeff Charles, but Norton claimed the victory on a count-back.
Other notable performances came from Nick Tamblyn, Mike Cheal, and Wayne Rees, who each scored 38 points, followed by Colin Price, Godfrey Farr, Colin Bennion, and Robin Butler, all with 37 points.
In the fourth round, Norton matched his previous score of 39 points, maintaining his strong form. However, Ray Freeman led this round with 41 points, followed by Roger Bennett with 40 points, and Paul Stone, who also recorded 39 points.
In addition to his performances in the Layton Cup, Norton also excelled in the Annual Ernest Penn Trophy, scoring 38 stableford points.
Norton’s round included eight gross pars and a strong back nine, earning him a spot on the club honours board. Don Hillcoat and Andy Moszczynski matched Norton's 38 points but missed out on the trophy due to the count-back rule.
With consistent performances across these key events, Norton is well-placed to be a significant presence at the club's prize-giving evening in September. The ongoing competitions promise to be exciting as players vie for top honours in the coming rounds.
