ROSS Golf Club's men seniors aged 55+ section successfully kick-started its 2025 programme of events and activities when 66 entrants took part in the annual ‘3 Clubs and a Putter’ 16 holes stableford competition, reports KEITH RAY.

Played this year from the club's Navy tees, it helped many to discover that they could be equally effective armed with a handful of clubs rather than a bag-full.

For Steve Sanders, having only joined the Ross Club's Gorsley based tree-lined course six months ago and returning to the game he left 25 years ago, it proved the ideal baptism to show his potential.

Steve had already made an impression taking part in the Seniors 2024 Winter Pairs League, when ably accompanied by Alan Standring, the pairing enjoyed some prize-winnings in finishing a creditable sixth.

Still armed with his new clubs as recommended by the club's Tim Hall School of Golf team and having received some pointers from professionals James Dobbs and Zach Galliford, the stage was set for Steve to deliver a performance in his first singles competition worthy of his investment, and this he duly did.

Scoring points on every hole and capturing six pars, Steve's consistent play amassed 36 points and he was a clear winner.

Ardent campaigner Roy Millington, still in good form having recently won the 2024 Patrick Curtis Shield Winter Pairs League with Peter Shaw, did his best to keep pace with Steve, his 34 points securing the runners-up spot.

He was followed by Charles Reeve-Tucker also with 34 points, Chris Collen with 32 points and Geoff Robinson, Brian Carver and Phil Andrews with 31 points.

Afterwards another meaningful occasion was experienced by all those taking part when the club's restaurant was full for an excellent two-course lunch provided by club caterer John Devine and his team.
