25 years ago, Becky Morgan was growing up as a teenager in Ross-on-Wye, preparing herself to become a Ladies Professional golfer, which she achieved in the year 2000.

Becky chose to dedicate her career to the US based Ladies PGA Tour in Florida, ultimately becoming a millionaire earner, and where she successfully still enjoys playing at the top-level against players some of whom are half her age.

Born in Abergavenny and educated with her twin sister Rachel at the Haberdashers School in Monmouth, Becky was introduced to golf when she was 12 years old by her Grandfather, Phil Harris, a partner in the Auctioneers, Coles Knapp and Kennedy. Becky played all of her early golf at Monmouth Golf Club before becoming a Welsh International.

She also owes much to her parents, who have both sadly since passed away, where Gwynne will be remembered as an Accountant locally and Secretary for several years of Ross 41 Club, and Jenny, who worked with Russell Clayfield’s Travel Agency in Ross, and was a capable tennis player at the Ross Tennis Centre.

Becky returned to Ross recently to spend some time with her Step-Mum, Jan, and she also found time to take advantage of the facilities at the Gorsley based, Ross Golf Club and specifically in the care of the Assistant Professional Oli Leett.

This was to learn of the latest ‘greens reading’ method known as Aimpoint, used by many tour members, where Oli is one of only six qualified coaches in the UK and Becky’s testimonial speaks for itself. She said:?“I really benefited from the sessions I had with Oli at the Tim Hall School of Golf at the Ross Club. Oli was very knowledgeable about AimPoint and the SAM Putt Lab analysis was also very informative. I’m now looking forward to putting what I have learnt to good use in the coming weeks on the LPGA tour.”

There was mixed news for members in that Paul Finch, who has been one of the Assistant Professionals at the THSG for the past three years, is leaving to better himself having been appointed an Assistant Professional at the Tidworth Garrison GC in Wiltshire.

Paul’s part, along with others, during his time at Ross, towards the highly successful development of the Club’s Juniors Academy, largely through school visits and initiatives, leaves a marvellous legacy and Paul will be well remembered and much missed.

On the other hand, better news reached members that not only was Ross Golf Club, for the fourth year running, named at No 1 in the Top 100 Golf Clubs in Gloucestershire, this being the Golfing Union to which it is affiliated, but is now in the Top 125 list of Golf Clubs throughout the UK.
