AFTER the appalling weather over the winter and early spring, it was wonderful to see more than 40 players competing in the Ross Golf Club Ladies 18-hole and 9-hole Spring Meeting Stableford Competitions, reports RUTH KIRCHMEIER.
Twenty four ladies played in the 18-hole competition , the first round of the Josie Powell Gross Competition.
This competition is awarded to the player with the best gross score over two rounds and is completed at the Autumn Meeting.
The Josie Powell Gross Cup was donated by Bunty and Gordon Powell in memory of their daughter Josie who sadly died of cancer in 2000.
Josie was a County player and was a member at Ross, becoming Ladies Club Champion in 1994-1997.
The winner was Sally Fycun with 34 points, closely followed by Kerry Welding in second with 33 points and Hannah Keir third with 31 points.
Nearest the pin on the 7th was Kerry Welding, on the 9th , Sally Fycun, and on the 12th, Mary Smith.
The front 9-hole Spring Stableford was played by 18 ladies and was won by Marie-Anne Belton with 16 points.
Karen Mirfin came second with 13 points Kay Cotton third with 12 points.
Fourteen past Lady Captains from the Ladies Section at Ross on Wye also had a convivial 9-hole competition followed by lunch on Thursday, May 9.
Ellie Teasdale, Lady Captain in 2021 to 2022, won the Rose Bowl Trophy with 16 points with Rosemary Williams coming second with 15 points, and Katie Stooke third with 14 points.
Several competition finals which were deferred due to inclement weather over the autumn and winter have also recently been completed.
The 2023 Medal Salver was finally won by Mary Smith with a nett score of 86. Runner up was Jennifer Gladwyn with a nett 84.
The 2023 13-hole Summer Knockout competition was finally won by Nadia Stirling and runner up was Lois Price, while the 13-hole Winter knockout was won by won by Lois Price and runner up was Jose Wilson.
Nadia continued her successful streak by also winning the Winter Eclectic with runner up Sally Fycun.
