At a well-attended Annual General Meeting recently, Ross Bridge Club members welcomed Les Phillips, supporter of the British Heart Foundation, to receive the charity donation of £500.

Les was representing his daughter, Becky Flynn, who has spent the last six months fundraising tirelessly for the BHF in memory of her brother Jonathan, who tragically passed away suddenly in November 2015 from a rare heart condition in his final year of studies at Aberystwyth University.

Having set herself a 12 month target to raise £5000, and with the support of parents, Joyce and Les, Becky embarked upon a series of amazing achievements, resulting in a total of over £11,000, and she is now setting her sights on an enhanced £20,000 target figure.

For her most recent challenge. Becky took part in the London Marathon, but she was hospitalised after nine miles. Becky had been wearing a lobster costume and the heat had become too much. Despite her disapointment, Becky was in the top 100 marathon fundraisers via Just Giving and in the top three for the British Heart Foundation.

From the annual reports of Ross Bridge Club’s various officers, it was no surprise for members to hear that their Club, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, is thriving. For this, they were mindful and appreciative of the role played by Roy Milnes, as he comes to the end of his six year’s tenure as Club Chairman.

There were reflections upon the changes and progress made during Roy’s time, including the introduction of duplimated boards and Bridgemates scoring systems which sees the Club’s current 144 membership levels reaching a record high.

Members were delighted at the appointment of their highly experienced member, Jo Baker, as Club Chairman. Jo will still have the benefit of Roy’s council as he will serve on the Committee as Tournaments Director.

Jo will also continue to have the stability of Chris Chowney as Secretary, Rosie Wilson as Membership Secretary, Keith Ray as Treasurer and fellow committee member Denise Robertson with Linda Blunt now joining the team as a newcomer to provide welcome opportunities for freshness and variety.
