HAVING been formed as a campaigning group when library provision in Ross-on-Wye was in jeopardy, the organisation is now seeking a new name.

The Ross Library Development Group has transitioned from a position of saving the library in June 2011 to where it is today, as being a supportive role for the town’s library and all that it offers to the community.

As a committee with the status of being Community Interest Group, it has had a vision for the future and a decision has been made to reflect what the organisation does today in a new name.

Consequently, a six-week consultation period on the proposal for a name change for Ross Library Development Group has begun.

A spokesman for the committee said: “We feel we need to do this in order to reflect our current role in supporting the library and communicating its many benefits to the wider community.

“To that end we propose the name the Friends of Ross Library. This has already been accomplished in other towns so this will bring us into line with them.”

After consulting the founding documentation, the committee are setting in motion the six-week consultation period, prior to a vote by an Extraordinary General Meeting of all members on Wednesday, February 19, at 2.30pm, in the Dennis Potter Room.

The new group aims to work in partnership with Herefordshire Libraries to support the work of the town’s library and to promote and encourage use of library services by the whole community.

The group hope to be able to raise funds for additional library furniture, equipment or activities through fundraising activities and events supporting or facilitating library activities such as author events, coffee mornings, library clubs and courses.

It is hope that these measures will encourage greater use of the library and its services.
