A SHOPLIFTER who assaulted a police officer after being arrested has been jailed for four weeks.

Johnathon Bushell stole a bottle of wine, meat and sweets from the Aldi store in Ross-on-Wye's Brookend Street on June 12, Hereford magistrates were told.

And he then attacked a police officer while being held in custody in Hereford.

The 43-year-old, of River View, Ross-on-Wye, admitted theft from a shop of goods worth £23.89 and assault by beating of an emergency worker.

Magistrates said there was no alternative to a custodial sentence, as he had attacked the police officer while in custody.
