The first team had to dig deep to prevent a late onslaught by the home team pack to hold out and register their first opening day win for 3 seasons. Ross started well with Ashley Nelms, Chris Thomas and Matt Redman, punching some big holes in the home team defence. This enabled scrum half Gareth Holdsworth to take advantage of any small gap, sniping at every opportunity. This kept Ross in the Broad Plain half and some great hands from Dan Field and Matt Taylor put Ali Rees in space and he cantered over to open the scoring. Huw Bellamy just missed the conversion but Ross were 5-0 ahead. Rather than use this lead to kick on, Ross seemed to take their foot off the gas. This let Broad Plain back into the game.
