The opening of a new fishing season is always a special event, when months of planning, preparation  and anticipation come to fruition.

For local salmon anglers next Tuesday, March 3, will be a landmark date in the calendar, with the official opening day for this iconic species on the River Wye.

Ross is best known as a spring salmon fishery, with prime fishing in the early months of the season.

These large ‘Springers’ are the first fish to enter the river from the sea and have been caught up to 30 pounds in recent times.

The record floods following storms Ciara and Dennis will mean high water levels for the opening week, with anglers probably using spinners and artificial minnows from the bank, rather than fly fishing and wading.
