ROSS-ON-WYE RFC celebrated their first home league game of the season in style, securing a decisive 32–17 victory over Yate. This commanding performance earned them maximum points, including a valuable try bonus point, an impressive feat given the absence of several key players.
The match began with both teams testing each other’s defences, but it was Ross who struck first. Twenty minutes in, captain Chris Thomas, playing at centre, broke through Yate’s line and sprinted over for the opening try. Although the conversion attempt narrowly missed, Ross established an early 5–0 lead.
Yate responded with a well-taken penalty minutes later, reducing the score to 5–3 and reminding Ross they would need to fight to maintain their lead.
Ross soon picked up the pace again, with full-back Joe Pye creating a moment of brilliance. Pye raced down the touchline, outpacing Yate’s defenders to score in the corner, extending Ross’s lead.
The crowd’s excitement was palpable as Ross began to take control. Fly-half Tom Mulhearn added to the scoreboard with a successful penalty kick just before half-time, bringing the score to 13–3 as the teams headed into the break.
The second half saw Ross return with renewed energy and a clear determination to secure their victory. Within minutes, Ross crossed the line for another try, this time in the corner, with Mulhearn converting brilliantly from a tough angle. Shortly after, second-row TC Leach, later named man of the match, bulldozed his way through Yate’s defence for another try, lifting Ross’s lead to a comfortable 25–10.
A near try followed when winger Aiden Street appeared to break through and touch down. However, the play was called back due to a forward pass, disappointing the home supporters but keeping the pressure on Yate.
The try of the game soon materialised when Connor Poole completed a swift and fluid passing sequence by the backs, touching down near the posts. Mulhearn’s accurate conversion put Ross ahead by a commanding margin, sealing their dominance.
Yate rallied late in the game, capitalising on a yellow card handed to Ross’s experienced prop. In the 75th minute, they managed a converted try, trimming the scoreline to 32–17. Despite this, Ross’s early lead and cohesive teamwork left Yate unable to stage a comeback.
The game’s high spirits were further lifted when Ross were awarded the Tribute Team of the Month, a recognition of their resurgence following some challenging seasons. This accolade highlights Ross’s hard work and determination to make a mark in the league this season.
Looking ahead, Ross’s next challenge will be a local derby on Saturday, November 9, when they host Drybrook 2nds. This anticipated match will test their momentum as they seek to build on this promising start to the season.
