The annual tennis tournament for The Richard Grindon Memorial Trophy took place at Ross-on-Wye Tennis Centre, by kind permission of Chris Friend. The event was on September 25th and Chris made the draw for pairs on the previous day.
Five pairs in two groups played a ‘round robin’ first round with ‘sudden death deuce’ in each game. There was some excellent play from all concerned and each match was keenly contested. In spite of being determined to win all participants played with great good humour, and much teasing was displayed.
By a very close margin there was a winner in each group. However, the runners up were a different matter. Two pairs in each group had won the same number of games, so, it had to be decided by matches won.
The semi-finals produced some excellent play which kept the spectators enthralled and applauding. The eventual finalists were Rosie Farr and Graham Turner, and Val Davies and Sarah Drake.
To say this went to the wire is an under statement. The match was played first to six with sudden death deuce in each game. Val and Sarah pulled ahead only to be pegged back by Rosie and Graham. it was all decided on deuce in the final game after being at five all. The winners were Rosie and Graham.
