NEWENT Town squeezed a game in last Thursday night (January 2) at Chipping Sodbury, which ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat for the visitors in freezing temperatures.
Two days later, nearly all local football was frozen out by icy pitches including the Daffs trip to Tytherington Rocks.
But Newent were unlucky to get nothing out of their first game of 2025, as they look to climb out of the Hellenic One basement.
The frezing conditions made for a cagey first half, although the hosts put the ball in the net in injury time, only for the assistant referee to flag it out.
After the break, the Daffs felt a knee in Kyle Taylor's back deserved more than a yellow card before Josh Comerford shot narrowly wide.
But on 62 minutes, a corner led to a scamble in the Daffs box and Ellis McSherry poked the ball home for a 1-0 Sods lead.
Newent forced three corners in a row looking for a leveller, but at the other end on 74 minutes, a long range effort from Owen Bell narrowly whistled past the post on 74 minutes.
Daffs keeper Adam Fenner made a brilliant save tipping over Tyler Dacre's strike on 81 minutes to keep it at a one-goal game, but that's how it stayed with chances at a premium.
At the weekend, Ross Juniors’ trip to Yorkley was one of the many frozen off, compounding a situation where their own ground has already been flooded three times this season.
Hopefully, teams can get back to action this Saturday (January 11) when fixtures include – Newent v Stonehouse, Woolaston 2nds v Ross Juniors, Chalford v Ruardean Hill, Kings Stanley v Lydbrook, Ruardean Hill 2nds v Mitcheldean, Sling v Lydbrook 2nds, Mitcheldean 2nds v Redbrook, Lydbrook A v Milkwall 2nds, Staunton & Corse A v Ruardean Hill A.
Sunday sees Ross Juniors Women travel to face Kidderminster United Women.
