Ross Juniors U9s entered the final week of the HJFL winter futsal programme in pole position after winning all four of their previous division one matches and knew that all they had to do was avoid defeat in either game to be the 2020 champions.
Against Pegasus Colts, Ross went a goal behind early on but threatened an equaliser straight away with Tyron hitting the post after a great run down the left. Zak made a vital clearance before Euan went close from a great long ball from Riley. Ross were starting to dominate the play and the equaliser soon came when Tyron and Riley combined for Tyron to slot the ball home. A great interception from Alex early in the second half saw him fire Ross into the lead before Tyron went close to stretching their lead further. Owen set up another chance for Tyron before the win was secured thanks to a great ball out of defence from Ben that found Tyron, who beat the Pegasus defender and squared the ball to give Alex a tap in but the Pegasus defender beat him to it and score an own goal.
Next up was Presteigne and the first half saw a dominant display from Ross but the Presteigne keeper was in fine form and kept them in the game. Euan went close twice early on before Tyron saw his shot strike the crossbar from Riley’s corner.
Euan had another shot saved before going close following Morgan’s long throw. Riley had a shot saved and Euan went close again before the opening goal finally came. Zak made an important clearance that found Alex and he turned and shot low into the far corner. Tyron doubled the Ross lead early in the second half before Owen intercepted a pass and scored with a neat finish.
Presteigne responded immediately and threatened the Ross goal but Ben made a great block before Tyron and Alex played a one-two which Tyron finished off expertly. Presteigne finished well, pulling a goal back and forcing Morgan into two good saves but the three points, and cup was secured.
Not only did Ross win all six of their division one matches, they also won all six in the qualifying group stage, which is an incredible achievement.
