Ross Juniors U17s welcomed Wellington on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the HFA Youth Cup.
The opening spell was even between both teams, but Wellington scored two quick goals 15 minutes into the game. Despite this setback, the home side created some good chances with Coby being denied by the Wellington keeper and Brad threatening with a great run.
The home side have had it pretty tough this season so far but when they score, their goals are pretty good and they do not get much better than Coby’s first of the season as he raced onto to a through ball and lobbed the keeper from 30 yards to make it 1 - 2.
Wellington was awarded a penalty when Charlie made a great goal-line save, tipping the ball over the bar. Unfortunately, it was Harry on goalkeeper duty! Wellington converted and quickly added a fourth goal before half time.
A slight rejig to the team formation saw Nat go upfront, which paid off early in the second half as he reduced the deficit with a great finish. Ross were having the better of the play and threatened a great comeback but unfortunately kept falling foul of the away team’s linesman. Nat did go close to getting a second goal for himself, but Wellington secured the win with a late break-away goal.
It was hard to pick a ‘Man of the Match’ with so many solid performances across the team, but the award went to Nat for his great all-round performance at both ends of the pitch.
Ross are back in league action at home to Bromyard on Sunday afternoon.
Ross Juniors U17s are still on the lookout for a few more players, especially a goalkeeper. If you know anyone in (school) years’ 11 or 12 keen to play, please contact Dan on 07805 379403.
