Ross Juniors U17s kicked off their season on Sunday with a 6 – 1 home defeat to top of the table Wellington.
With a squad struggling for numbers, the U17s came into the game having had no pre-season friendlies. On a beautiful sunny afternoon the team handed debuts to three new players and had to get through the game with no subs.
Wellington had the better of the first half but some great goalkeeping from Marcus and strong defending from Dan and Harry kept the visitors out until midway through the first half following a well worked set play.
Wellington quickly doubled their lead with a break-away goal and it could have been worse but for another great block from Marcus. A determined run from Jack almost resulted in a goal but Wellington had the last word of the half with a well taken goal.
Wellington added another goal early in the 2nd half so manager Dan tweaked the formation and suddenly Wellington’s defence were put under pressure. Jack was unlucky not to score when he beat the Wellington keeper to the ball and shot the wrong side of the post and then saw a near post shot saved as he beat two defenders on the right.
William made two crucial interceptions as Wellington piled on the pressure and eventually the pressure told as they added two quick goals to end the contest.
The Ross boys kept going and grabbed the consolation goal their hard work deserved, as Brad slotted the ball into the top corner. Ross were then denied a penalty as James and Coby combined to set up Myles, who then beat one player and was brought down by another in the penalty area but the referee waved play on.
It was a great effort by all the players and next up is a trip to Pegasus on Sunday.
The team still needs more players, especially a goalkeeper, so if you know anyone in (school) years’ 11 or 12 please contact Dan on 07805 379403.
