DON Leatherbarrow pulled off a masterstroke kicking his way to more British age-group swimming records at the age of 86.

The Ross-on-Wye swimmer competed in the National Long Course Masters Championships at Swansea International Sports Centre in Wales.

And former country and western professional musician Don, who is 87 on Saturday (March 15), continued his exceptional swimming career by winning gold in all six events he entered, setting new British records in four of them.

Competing in the 85-89 age group, he completed the 400m Freestyle in 7 minutes 31.26 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 7.41.45.

In the 200m Freestyle, he finished in 3.27.55, breaking a long-standing record of 3.49.22 that had been set in 2004.

He also set a record in the 200m Breaststroke with a time of 4.43.43, smashing the old record of 5.20.27 seconds.

Additionally, he claimed the 50m Freestyle title with a time of 37.98, breaking the previous record of 39.40.

On top of that, Don – who is a member of Gloucester Masters Swimming Club – also secured gold in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke events.

Training primarily in a 25m pool, he faced the challenge of adapting to the 50m pool required for the competition, but exceeded his expectations with incredible results.

He said: "As I train in a 25m pool, like most of the country, adapting speed and endurance to a 50m pool is quite difficult, so the results were unexpectedly great for me."

Wife Cindy has been a steadfast support, managing logistics and ensuring he is always prepared for each event.

"My wife has been amazing throughout the whole thing. She drives me to where I need to be, makes sure I’m on time, and does so much behind the scenes," he added.
