Whitchurch CE Primary School’s chess team are delighted to have won the Herefordshire Primary School’s Chess trophy for the first time.

The chess club has been running for five years, ran by Key Stage 2 teacher, Colin Mutton.

At the finals of the competition they played three matches, beating Holmer CE Primary and Hereford Cathedral B, 7 – 0 and 6.5 – 0.5 respectively.

In their final match, they played Hereford Cathedral School A, who had also won their first two matches convincingly. In this decisive match, with 10 minutes to go, Cathedral led 3 – 2 with only two matches left. In the last five minutes both matches swung in favour of the Whitchurch players, who held on to win the trophy.

Colin Mutton is very proud of his team, he told the Ross Gazette: “I am so pleased for them. They played with such sustained focus and determination and handled the pressure brilliantly.

“They have worked hard for this and fully deserve their success.”
