The CLA is calling on the government to support a campaign to encourage people to take jobs on farms to help feed the nation, as travel restrictions and illness threaten a shortage of up to 80,000 agricultural workers. The Association in the Midlands is asking for Government assistance to help source workers and advertise positions
Time is of the essence as vegetable growers are already beginning to crop, lambing season has reached its peak and soft fruit – which must be picked within a 3 day period – is due to begin in April.
However, the demand for labour comes at a time when thousands of people find themselves suddenly out of employment.
CLA Midlands Director Mark Riches said: “This are deeply concerning times, and we are determined to do everything we can to help the country through it.
“But, farms are facing a shortage of 80,000 workers - something we have never seen before.
“This is why we are calling for a ‘New Land Army’ to help farmers feed the country. The sector offers offer better rates of pay and more varied roles than is sometimes reported.
“We need urgent Government assistance to help source workers and advertise positions. Time is of the essence as many farmers will soon begin, or have already, begun planting or harvesting.”
