A local farmer is providing exciting vocational training and employment prospects for young people from a wide area.

Chris, a farmer from Ross, tutors students in land-based work which is designed to introduce and prepare young people for working life. It has been created as an add-on to his existing pig farming business.

Chris said: "Of the young people that come here, the youngest is probably 14 years old, and they tend to be students who, for a range of reasons, just can't cope in a class room in environment.

"Here, they can learn skills which includes brick laying, metal work, welding, tools, agriculture and livestock."

Chris, who was formerly a lecturer at Hartpury College, takes students from referral units and private organisations from across the country.

Rufus Beacham, 15, from Cheltenham, is currently working at Chris' farm and has been putting the finishing touches to a metal bench he has created with the welding skills he's learned at the farm.Rufus said: "I've been coming here for two years and I enjoy it. In the future, I want a career in the Marine Corps so the work here gives an insight into working life."

Both Rufus and Chris agree on the "excitable", sometimes fractious, atmosphere that can permeate the group when throwing in various personalities, often from a range of dysfunctional backgrounds.

Chris: "We have one staff member for every three students and you've got to be on your toes. It's about finding something they're interested in. Once you've got that hook they're okay. Driving is a major hook."
