A year eight student at John Kyrle High School won the Lion Peace Poster Competition, then the district competition and went on to come second in the national competition.
George Carmichael took part in the competition which is held world wide and is designed to encourage students to think about peace, with a different theme each year.
Ross-on-Wye Lions Club in conjunction with John Kyrle High School ran the Lion Peace Poster Competition as the topic of peace and international understanding is as topical as ever.
This year’s theme was ‘Dare to Dream’ and as always there were high standards of entries. This made picking the top very difficult task for the judges, Headteacher, Mr Julian Morgan, President of Ross Lions, Mike Nelson and Ross Lions Youth Officer, Nick Dale.
After much consideration and some discussion, the judges agreed on the following awards:
First place went to George Charmichael, second place went to a student from 8K and third place to Livia Hole.
Each wins a cash prize to enable them to purchase something to help them with their studies.
The winning poster then went forward to the Lions District Competition. The district comprises 98 clubs and Ross Lions were very pleased to report to the JKHS Art Department that George’s work won.
This success was added to when Lions held their National Competition where George placed second in the British Isles.
At an assembly to celebrate the efforts of all of the year eight students, Lion President, Mike, awarded certificates to students who whose work was Very Highly Commended, Highly Commended and Commended, as well as the top three winners. He also presented a donation of £400 from Ross Lions to the Art Department for materials.
Ross Lions thanks the Head of Art, Ms Kelly Davies and her team for continued support of this project that has been part of the Art Curriculum for year eight for more than 20 years.
They hope a selection of the posters will be on display at Ross Library in early 2024.
