A NUMBER of special Remembrance events will be held in around Ross-on-Wye over the coming days.
The ceremonies begin on Thursday, November 7 at 11.40 am, when pupils from Ashfield Park and St Joseph’s Primary School will be joined by the Mayor of Ross, town councillors and staff along with members of the Ross and District Branch of the Royal British Legion at St Mary’s Churchyard to commemorate those who fell in the Korean War, the Falklands Conflict as well as to mark the passing of 22 Chelsea Pensioners who died in Ross during the Second World War.
On Friday, November 8, wreaths will be laid in Wormelow by primary school children to honour the Second World War spy Violette Szabo at the village’s war memorial.
A Remembrance Service will be held in St Michael’s Church, Brampton Abbots, on Saturday, November 9 at 10am, which will be followed by a short service of Thanksgiving at First Avenue, to mark the refurbishment of the Greytree Shrine at 11am.
On Remembrance Sunday itself, November 10, serving military personnel, veterans, army and air cadets as well as Scouts and Guides will parade under the direction of Warrant Officer Clinton Marsh RAF, from the police station on Old Maids Walk at 10am before marching to the War Memorial on The Prospect.
The public is invited to meet at the Prospect from 10.30am, where the parade will be joined by civic dignitaries and representatives of a host of town organisations and clubs, for the town’s formal commemoration of those that have lost their lives in conflict.
The Service will be conducted Canon Freda Davies. This will be followed immediately by a short Remembrance Sunday Service to be held in St Mary’s Church.
On Armistice Day, a short act of commemoration, including a two-minute silence, will be held at the Market House at 11am, to mark the signing of the treaty. The start and finish of the silence will be marked by the firing of a maroon from The Prospect.
Poppies will be on sale throughout the town. The Royal British Legion will continue to manage a stall in Morrisons until Saturday November 9.
