Pupils, teachers and parents gathered at Ashfield Park Primary School on Thursday, November 9th, for a Remembrance Service in front of members of the Ross-on-Wye branch of the Royal British Legion.
Ashfield Park pupils from year six led the assembly, standing up in turn to speak about Remembrance and the significance of the poppy.
The pupils performed a poem, speaking individually, which was lovely and very well remembered. A cartoon animation of Charlie Brown walking through poppies and the trenches was shown. He introduced the poem ‘In Flanders Fields,’ which was recited by pupil, Emily Reef.
An emotive Cbeebies poppy animation was shown next, followed by a BBC clip about why poppies are worn.
The pupils sang a hymn ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer,’ and invited parents, guests and teachers to join in, with the music and lyrics displayed on a screen. They also sang this when they were part of the Service at the Korean War memorial at The Prospect later that day.
Another BBC clip was shown about the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, and about the support of the Royal British Legion. Pupils then showed the fantastic poppy wreaths they had made in art class, which they said they were going to lay at the memorial in Ross later that afternoon.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
