John Kyrle High School is planning a very special evening to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the school’s twinning with Kisiki College, Namutumba, Uganda.

It has been 25 years since the first group of students and staff travelled as pioneers, helping to establish what has gone on to become one of the most successful and enduring partnerships between a British and Ugandan school.

The link started initially between the two high schools following the visit of Bishop Cyprian Bamwose, from the Busoga district of Uganda back in 1993. The main objectives of the link have evolved over the last 25 years and now include supporting joint projects in agriculture, health, sanitation, technology, sport and education; to encourage the building of friendships and cultural links; to develop the capacity for self-reliance of both communities alongside recognition of inter-dependency. In 2007 Ross and Namutumba town council were formally twinned.

A celebratory party and hog roast is planned for Saturday, June 9th. Hosting the event will be Irene and Hope, Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher from Kisiki College along with former Deputy Headteacher, James.

James was involved in the original setting up of the partnership and is well known to the 300 or so JKHS students who have travelled to Uganda with their teachers over the last 25 years.

The organisers would love to see as many past students, staff and governors as possible joining in with the celebrations. They are seeking help from Gazette readers in spreading the word.

Further details about the link and the celebration can also be found on the Ross Namutumba link Facebook page: Ross residents are also always welcome to pop into the ’Crested Crane’ shop on Henry Street to find out more about the link as well as buy or donate items in aid of projects in Namutumba.

JKHS teachers, Nick Wardale and Julie Markey are leading this July’s sixth form expedition to Namutumba. They can be contacted at the school if anyone has any questions about the celebration planned for June 9th.
