A total of £87,000 is to be spent on further measures to get people in Herefordshire walking more.
The idea originally came from the county’s one-off Citizens climate Assembly in early 2022.
The previous Herefordshire Council administration then agreed to use £1.33 million of government money to fund it and 13 other climate-related measures, with the initial figure for the Active Walking Programme put at £44,770.
Asked about the now-higher figure, a council spokesperson said: “Due to the success of the project, this funding is to extend it for a further two years.”
They explained that the Active Walking project aims to increase levels of walking for commuters, parents and schoolchildren across the county, starting again in spring.
Activities will include a walk to school challenge, school assemblies and workshops, wildlife walks, Nordic walking courses and increased uptake in the council’s Get Walking website and app, the spokesperson said.
