For many years the Nanteos Cup, which was once believed to have been the Holy Grail, the cup from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper, belonged to a resident of Ross-on-Wye.
After it was stolen and then recovered a couple of years ago, she handed the Cup to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth for safekeeping.
Although it has been tested and found to be far too late to have been the Holy Grail it is a medieval wooden bowl whose origins are still shrouded in mystery.
During the Middle Ages the Cup was kept in Strata Florida Abbey in Ceredigion. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1500s, seven Cistercian monks who worshipped at the Abbey escaped with the cup and hid in Nanteos Mansion, a stately country house, just outside Aberystwyth.
In July, during his summer visit to Wales, His Royal Highness Prince Charles will tour Strata Florida and view the legendary Nanteos Cup, which will be brought back for His Royal Highness’s visit.
