HOW can we celebrate 300 years of John Kyrle?

Even the town’s school is named after him in Ross-on-Wye. For centuries, music has been used to honour and remember significant people and events in history, and now, it’s the turn of Ross.

In our bustling little town of Ross, we have the same streets, the same river, but 300 years ago, just after a bad bout of the plague, the story starts.

A baby boy, born to Constable Stephen Kyrle and his wife Alice, was raised to lead the community as was his birthright.

But their son was not interested in the traditional role of constable that befitted every town at the time. He wanted to be outside, working with his hands, enjoying the beautiful land and river, that stretched over the hills as the finest countryside to be found.

Ross was known as the greatest town across Europe for its lamb (Hanks may not have been there, but we still historically had the reputation of being the best) but flooding, storms and problems with clean water meant that the town suffered disaster.

What could be done to save peoples’ homes, crops and livestock?

This musical is for the whole family to enjoy. It brings to life the story of our town and how the river, the fields, the magnificent views that were the origins of the tourist trade itself all came into being.

Students from John Kyrle High School have been rehearsing since July and students from junior schools are also involved in rehearsals.

They are leading the music, drama and dance as an explosion of local talent which must be supported, celebrated and enjoyed.

Rehearsals have begun with adults, children and students from across the community coming together to prepare stunning costumes, make spectacular scenery, which includes woodland and a river.

There is also an orchestra and a band providing the musical accompaniment with lots of dancing and singing as this exciting play unfolds.

The musical will be performed on October 18 at John Kyrle High School and the following day, October 19 at St Mary’s Church.
