John Kyrle’s record of exceptional performance at A-Level continued this year with 62% of students gaining the highest A*- B grades, 86% gaining grades A*-C and an overall pass rate of 100%. The performance of students is all the more impressive given the increasingly rigorous demands placed upon the qualification and the huge amount of variability in results seen nationally.
The school was particularly pleased with the amount of A*-A grades which has resulted in the highest number of John Kyrle students gaining places at Oxbridge than ever before and others gaining places at prestigious universities across the country. These include students who will study modern foreign languages, mathematics, engineering, computer science, history, economics, medicine and veterinary science.
Headteacher, Nigel Griffiths, said the emphasis the school has upon academic excellence was borne out by these results and commended his students, their families, his staff and governors for all their hard work.
Mr Griffiths said “In addition to excelling at A Level, our students participated in the full range of school life. They were involved in music, drama, sport and fund-raising as well as being subject ambassadors working with younger students in maths, modern foreign languages and literacy.”
Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form, Rob Wallace, is delighted that these excellent results enabled students to pursue a range of courses at Universities and Colleges across the UK. He said that there were very many excellent overall performances which have allowed students to progress. Some of these include:
Lauren Anthony who will read Politics at Sheffield, Head Girl Ali Banks-Martin will read Costume Design at Central St Martins in London, Ben Bornoff who will read History at Oxford, Nick Burden who will read Computer Science at Oxford, Joana Da Silva who will read Natural Science at Edinburgh, James Denny who will read Engineering at Exeter, Stephen East who will read Geography at Edinburgh, Head Boy Jonathan Evans will read English Literature at East Anglia, Alex Flach who will read Biomedical Sciences at UCL, Joe Fletcher who will read Geology at Imperial, Lucy Godwin who will read Business at Exeter, Molly Hodgson-Casson who will read Physics at Nottingham, Tom Howard who will read Law at Oxford, Conor Kearns who will read medicine at Birmingham, William Phillips who will read Veterinary Science at Bristol, Joe Rae who will read Human Sciences at Oxford, Emily Smith who will read English Literature at Durham, Alfie Steer who will read History and Politics at Oxford and Eleanor Williams who will read Psychology at Exeter
Mr Wallace said, "The overwhelming majority of our students have gained places at their first choice of university. Others move on to training and employment opportunities. It is a great satisfaction for staff at the school to have played a part in helping students progress to their chosen next stage. "
Nigel Griffiths was delighted with high performance across the full range of subjects offered at John Kyrle. He was also very pleased at the success of those students who had joined John Kyrle’s Sixth Form from other schools. Mr Griffiths noted that these results, which do not include General Studies, were similar to those from last year when the school was placed in the top 10% of schools/colleges nationally. He said that this summer’s performance, with almost 40% of all grades at A*- A, endorsed further the continued view of Ofsted that, together with Leadership and Student Behaviour, the Sixth Form at John Kyrle is Outstanding.
Chair of Governors, Karen Frost said, "John Kyrle High School’s ‘A’ Level results continue to impress, year on year. I am delighted the school offers high-quality education to students wishing to achieve their ‘A’ levels in our community before they progress into the ‘world of work’ or onto Higher Education. Congratulations to our students who deserve these excellent results. And a big ‘thanks’ from all JKHS governors to the teachers and support staff who put in so much dedicated time supporting each and every student. Another good year with plenty to celebrate."
