GARDENERS' World presenter Monty Don has shared the heartbreaking news that his Golden Retriever, Nell, has passed away due to cancer.
The announcement was made via an emotional tribute on the Herefordshire-based TV presenter's Instagram account.
This loss comes three years after the passing of Monty's other Golden Retriever, Nigel.
In his tribute, Monty, who lives near the Welsh border near Leominster, wrote, "I was going to tell you about my new book which is published next week but that can wait because my lovely dear Nell died last night.
"She was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now."
Monty also mentioned that Nell has been buried next to Nigel in their garden, wrapped in one of Monty's jackets with flowers, balls, and her favourite biscuits.
He added: "Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear. So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad."
Both Nell and Nigel were regular features on Gardeners' World and have now been laid to rest beside each other in the family garden.
After the announcement, Monty received an outpouring of support from both friends and fans alike.
One fan wrote, "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that Nell has gone to join Nigel – far too soon. May you find comfort in the presence of family – including the other dogs.
"Ned, in particular, will miss her terribly."
Another commented on her absence from recent episodes of Gardeners' World, saying, "Shocking and incredibly sad news. She was such a lovely girl and has been taken far far too soon."
