A manhole cover that collapsed on the A40 dual carriageway near Monmouth this morning (June 8th) has resulted in hour-long delays to travel times this afternoon, as a lane has been closed to allow emergency repairs to be done.

Motorists heading from Ross-on-Wye towards Monmouth have been stuck in tailbacks from Whitchurch.

Whitchurch Primary School tweeted that a school swimming trip to Monmouth had been cancelled. They tweeted: "Swimmers have been unable to get to Monmouth due to huge tailbacks. Please do come and collect your children from school if you can."Gwent police told the Ross Gazette: "At 10.30am we had reports of a collapsed manhole cover on the A40 lane 2 southbound just after the traffic lights. The lane was closed at around 12pm and will remain closed while repairs take place."
