More children from Herefordshire, especially those who receive free school meals, actively participated in Herefordshire Council's Talk Community Team's summer holiday activities this year. The programme witnessed a significant increase, with 1,167 children participating, up from 1,008 last summer.
Throughout the county, the children had access to diverse sessions, thanks to the collaboration with over 34 organisations. From horse-riding, parkour, pottery, to cheerleading, the range was expansive. Additionally, every session ensured the children received a free meal.
Speaking about the programme, Councillor Ivan Powell, Herefordshire Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, expressed his satisfaction. He said, "With the support of the county's remarkable activity providers, we've rolled out an exceptional range of activities. This has enabled children to acquire new skills, make friends, and genuinely enjoy themselves."
Ivan further highlighted the importance of the initiative, especially in these trying times. "Seeing an increasing number of families benefitting from these activities is heartening. Given the ongoing cost of living crisis, it's imperative to offer such valuable services."
The Here for Herefordshire holiday initiative receives funding from the Department for Education. The council's Talk Community team collaborates with numerous local organisations to ensure children have access to a plethora of free activities throughout the summer.
