A RESTORED First World War shrine has been re-dedicated as part of this year’s Remembrance commemorations.

The shrine, which names the 32 soldiers who lived and worked in the Greytree area of Ross in 1918 and acknowledges that four men died while on active service, was originally located outside Greytree Lodge in Second Avenue.

But following its restoration by members of Ross-on-Wye Men’s Shed, after it had become rotten and warped with the names beginning to flake off and its overall condition deteriorating, it has a new home at the end of First Avenue.

Canon Freda Davies who led the dedication service in front of a large number of local residents and representatives of the Royal British Legion who had attended, said: “The restoration of this shrine now enables us once more to remember all those from this community who were caught up in the courageous but tragic events of the First World War.”
