EMERGENCY roadworks to a water main in Ross-on-Wye has resulted in the town centre being closed to traffic.

The water main outside Hanks the Butchers shop and the Oxfam charity store in Broad Street was overflowing this morning, Friday, November 28 and contractors have been called in to resolve the situation.

This will mean that the new road surface which was laid in September is being dug up due to urgent watermain issues.

The road was closed to traffic at 12.15pm and is not expected to re-open until the evening.

The contractors emphasised that the road would be repaired in time for the Christmas Fayre and Christmas lights switching on ceremony on Sunday.

A spokesman for Welsh Water said: "Our crews are on site following a burst main in Broad Street, Ross on Wye. They are working hard to complete the repair and put down temporary tarmac today. We will then plan a reinstatement to match the red road surface. We are sorry for any inconvenience."
