This term, Walford Primary School children have been learning about Modern Britain and looking at changes in domestic life, leisure and tourism, entertainment and food since the 1950s. Pupils in Class 3 and Class 4 wrote letters to the Queen asking her about the changes she had witnessed during her reign and how those changes have affected the country.
The children have always affectionately called one of the school’s longstanding governors, Mrs Joyce Thomas MBE DL, the ‘Queen of Walford’. They were keen to ask her about the changes she has experienced during her many years of service within the community of Ross-on-Wye.
Staff and pupils were captivated during an interview with Mrs Thomas as she recounted so many exciting events, including the day she met the Queen, to receiving her MBE, and when McDonalds came to Britain. Everyone was delighted to hear about Ross Preschool and the park which was established during the time that Mrs Thomas was the first lady Mayor of Ross.
Mrs Thomas thoroughly enjoyed her audience with Walford Primary School and said: “It is such a pleasure to share my life experiences with so many enthusiastic and intelligent children.”
