Lea CE Primary School in Ross-on-Wye has been very busy this term, taking part in a range of activities and events to support and enhance their literacy learning.
World Book Day, which is usually celebrated on Thursday, March 1st, was postponed due the arrival of the ‘Beast from the East’ and Storm Emma, which resulted in severe snowfall and the closure of many schools.
Returning to school after the snow had largely cleared, Lea students celebrated World Book Day on Monday, March 5th and had a fantastic day.
All of the staff from Lea Primary shared stories with the children during a special ‘Story Time’ in the morning, and in the afternoon, children had the opportunity to read and share books from home, as well as explore the school library.
After school the school held a ‘Book Swap’ event, during which the children could choose new books to take home and enjoy.
They also held a competition in which the children were asked to decorate a wooden spoon to represent their favourite book character. The quality of the entries was outstanding, ranging from Where’s Wally to Paddington Bear, and Dennis the Menace to Peter Rabbit.
Year four and five pupils also had a visit from Annie Cavill, a poet from the Forest of Dean, as part of their work on performance poetry.
Annie talked to the children about her poetry and influences and they very much enjoyed hearing her share some of her poems. By the end of the morning, the children impressed Annie with their own poems they had written.See the full story and more pictures in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
