The Clangers project is a strategy which was introduced to students at John Kyrle High School by local GP, Dr Simon Lennane.
He set out the project last term to support the wellbeing of young people as they approach the exam period. The school’s work in this area continues as the Mental Health Forum group meet regularly to work on a positive mental health support package for all students but in particular new students to the school.
The group is comprised of mostly Year 7 students, with representatives from Years 9 and 10, and works closely with HealthWatch Hereford and Laura Salter, a school trustee. During the recent Mental Health Awareness Week, students from the group moved from class to class during tutor time, with tips for their peers to assist and support them with positive mental health.
Feedback from the students was very positive. Those who listened to the tips and advice felt that it was helpful to hear them, especially from their peers.
The members of the Mental Health Forum who visited the classes also commented that they got a lot out of the discussion.
They were pleased that the sessions were well-received. Good question and answer sessions resulted in many cases, to everyone’s benefit.
A school spokesperson told the Gazette: “This student-led initiative is just one part of JKHS’ work to support our students to be happy, healthy and successful.”
