1st Linton Brownies recently had a fantastic trip to Ross Fire Station to complete their Fire Safety Badge. Matt, Martin and Wayne, retained firemen, explained what firemen do, the different kinds of fires, fire vehicles and what to do in event of a fire.
The Brownies were halfway through having a go at using the hose and looking at the fire engines when a call out came through. The firemens’ alert beepers went off, so the visitors had to quickly go back inside and stand in a safe place where they could watch what happened, they were a bit scared but very excited.
Martin showed the girls the print out showing that the firefighters had to attend a tree that was on fire and where they had to go to deal with it.
The firemen on duty have five minutes to get to the station. The girls watched them come running in to get changed and leaping into the fire engine along with Matt and Wayne. They zoomed off in the fire engine with the blue lights and sirens on.
Martin was left to try and calm down some very excited Brownies and leaders before sending them home with a reminder to get parents to check their smoke alarms every week.
Jenny Steel of 1st Linton Brownies said: “Thank you so much to all the retained firefighters at Ross, you have inspired some firewomen of the future.”
