THE GROWING affordable housing crisis has become a top priority for local government leaders, with over 2,000 households currently on the waiting list.

Cllr Ed O'Driscoll, chairperson of the connected communities scrutiny committee, has called for more decisive action to address the growing affordable housing crisis in Herefordshire.

The issue has highlighted the failure of commercial developers to meet the demand, pushing the need for action.

One recommendation that has gained traction is the creation of an arm’s length commercial development company.

This initiative would enable the Council to build affordable homes on its own land, giving it greater control over local housing needs.

The proposal, which has passed through the committee and received support from cross-party working groups, is set to be discussed at the Cabinet meeting in March.
