ROWERS introduced another star to the sport last week, when TV presenter Craig Doyle arrived at the riverside to have a go for a new competition on ITV’s This Morning.
The sports presenter was put through his paces on Ross-on-Wye RC’s ‘sculling machine’ on dry land before launching out on the Wye in a double scull.
Viewers can see the footage on This Morning next Tuesday (February 22), followed by another segment the following month.
It’s not the first time the club has welcomed celebrities to film at the club, with members coaching former Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya last summer for a Celebrity Antiques Road Trip show.
And in 2018, Will Millard took a crash course in rowing and “channelled his inner Redgrave” at the Ross Regatta for his BBC series on the River Wye.
Craig, an international triathlete for Ireland, also filmed segments at Symonds Yat and the Three Choirs Vineyard near Newent.
A spokesperson for the club, which was founded more than 150 years ago, said: “Fun February morning. Today Ross Rowing Club welcomed Craig Doyle, sports TV presenter, and took part in an ITV ad to “Win 90 thousand pounds” to be shown on This Morning on February 22 and March 21.
“Annie Williams, Julie Smith, Geraldine Calcraft and Sheron Dean-Lucas were filmed in the quad scull and Jeremy Picton-Turbervill took Craig on the river in a double, while some of us said how we would spend £90,000!
“BT Sport Rugby and MotoGP presenter Craig is doing a travel around UK advertising the competition to win £90k.
“They had been to Symonds Yat before calling in at the rowing club before going to the Three Choirs Vineyard near Newent for some wine tasting and glass blowing!
“Craig was given brief rowing instruction on dry land and then taken onto the river in a stable double with Jeremy, helped by Ian Hale – the TV face of Ross Rowing Club – and there will be footage of the ladies quad on the river.
“At the boathouse, the ladies were later interviewed and asked the question ‘what would you do with £90k?’
“Their bit will be broadcast on Monday, March 21, and the bit with Craig on the river will be broadcast on February 22, both on This Morning which is weekdays from 10am to 12.30pm.”
