A CHERRY tree planted on a Millennium Green, has become Wormelow’s war memorial.
It replaces an Acacia tree, which nestled in the hedgerow in the village’s Tump Lane.
When the Acacia tree was threatened with being felled in 1978, local resident Val Prime mounted a campaign to save it…and won, ensuring that it lived for another 45 years.
When the tree was finally felled in May 2023, workmen found a young cherry tree growing amongst the Acacia tree roots.
It was decided that the cherry tree should take over the role of being the village’s war memorial and it was planted within the Millennium Green in April this year.
Alison Bevan, the daughter of Val Prime, unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion following this year’s Remembrance commemorations.
